Dating and Relationships

Dating is difficult for everyone, but it can be especially difficult for those of us on the spectrum who struggle with communication, interpersonal skills and emotional management. Over the years, I've learned a lot through trial and error, dating both neurotypical and neurodivergent people. Despite the variety of experiences, though, what I've learned has been universal to any relationship. The biggest thing that I have learned personally is to lower the stakes in your mind. It can be incredibly daunting and overwhelming to navigate the world of dating, and it is easy to over-idealize it in your mind. I'm guilty of this! But over time I've learned to minimize expectations. Don't go into a situation expecting a certain outcome--human relationships are not equations, and there are no surefire ways to predict how any given interaction will go. And don't put pressure on yourself; if it is the right person, you won't have to pretend to be something you're not.
