Emotional Support Animals

Earlier this month, I adopted a puppy. I've always loved animals, but it wasn't until recently that I discovered how important an emotional support animal can really be. There are plenty of reasons why someone may need an ESA; for me, it's because I'm on the spectrum and regularly deal with anxiety and depression. Pets provide companionship and unconditional love and comfort, but that's not all. Having a dog has helped me to establish a routine--they need walking, feeding, grooming, training and social enrichment. To fulfill my pup's needs, I have to fall into a routine too. This also means that I never forget to eat, which is something I struggle to work into my day. My dog also provides me with a way to stim healthily. When I'm feeling a sensory overload, I run my fingers through his hair and focus on the sensation to center myself. It helps me avoid more self destructive forms of stress stimming. These are only a few of the ways that my dog helps me. Once he's trained, he will be even more helpful! Whether it's a dog, a cat, a hamster, or a fish, there can be huge benefits in investing yourself in an animal.
