It’s Different For Everyone

I was a clumsy child. Always tripping over my own feet, always banging my head on things, always dropping things that shouldn’t be dropped. I was and still am consistently covered in bruises and scrapes. My brother, also on the spectrum, was not as traditionally clumsy but still struggled with fine motor skills like tying his shoes and holding a pencil. People tend to think that being on the spectrum only has mental and social effects, but in reality it affects much more. For some of us on the spectrum, it can be a serious struggle to complete physical tasks that other people find simple. But as with all traits of autism, it is different for everyone. There are those on the spectrum who are not as affected by these motor function difficulties– in fact, some have an enhanced motor skillset or a propensity for a certain physical activity. No matter where you land on the spectrum, it is important to be kind to yourself and not measure yourself against others. However clumsy or agile you are, you are exactly who you are meant to be!
